Odor complaints at Marshalltown’s JBS plant have dropped 25 percent since 2009, according to Troy Mulgrew, general manager of the meat-packing plant.

Mulgrew, who addressed the city council Monday, said pork producer JBS has made investments to respond to community concern.

“We consider ourselves trying to do the right thing at the plant,” he said. “We’ve improved many things.”

According to city records 206 calls were received in 2009, 179 calls in 2010 and 149 by the end of November this year.

Detailing work with an ozone system installed this year, as well as a room air “scrubber” that functions like a vent on a household stove, he said JBS has done a considerable amount of work to get rid of unwanted odors.
